A strategic review of the NHS Ayrshire & Arran Estate was undertaken in 2011/12 with the support and advice from The Green Exercise Partnership. This was in order to look at improving the management and use of ‘NHS greenspace’ for patients, staff, visitors and the wider community, by providing welcoming and attractive spaces and paths within hospital grounds for recreation and relaxation, rehabilitation and recovery programmes.
The review highlighted 7 sites which could be developed to have maximum impact on health and wellbeing. Ayr/Ailsa Hospital Campus was identified as the first site for development and the first phase of this work involved renewal of one path between Ayr Hospital and Ailsa Hospital and the development of a new path from Ailsa back up to Ayr Hospital. The first phase has been a success and NHS Ayrshire & Arran having been given the opportunity to become a Demonstration Site for the Green Exercise Partnership and expand on the work already completed. Phase 2 of the project will involve a woodland management plan and expanding the existing paths further.
A Landscape Assessment and Development Report was produced for the site in 2012.
A Woodland Management Plan was produced as a follow up to the Landscape Assessment and Development Report to provide a rationale for the future management of woodlands and individual trees.
This tender sets out the woodland management (silvicultural) work elements identified for implementation under the Woodland Management Plan
