Edinburgh is home to a thriving community of social enterprises and has long been recognised as a leading centre for social enterprise. In 2005 it became one of the first cities in the UK to have a dedicated social enterprise strategy when it published ‘A Social Enterprise Strategy for Edinburgh: A New Way of Doing Business’.
This pioneering document is now in its third iteration. Tuesday 12th November saw the launch of the Edinburgh Social Enterprise Strategy for 2013 – 2018. A number of supporters and stakeholders – including City of Edinburgh Council Leader Andrew Burns and Third Sector Champion Councillor Maureen Child – attended the launch event hosted by the Edinburgh Social Enterprise Network.
Edinburgh has 120 social enterprises doing business in the city and this number is set to grow. The strategy is ambitious; it will require buy-in, support and resources from a wide range of partners and stakeholders. In looking forward to 2018, the strategy sets out how social enterprises will be key to a vibrant economy that delivers the best outcomes for the people of Edinburgh.
